Just 10 per cent of candidates in West Bengal are women
Kolkata, May 4: Just 10 per cent of the candidates contesting the elections in West Bengal ruled by a lady herself are women.

Out of the 1,960 candidates contesting the elections in all the phases, only 198 or 10 per cent are women, the West Bengal Election Watch says in its report.
Out of the 1,960 candidates there are in all 354 who have declared pending criminal cases against them. Out of this there are 294 who have declared serious pending criminal charges against them.

Candidates with criminal cases: Out of the 1960 candidates analysed, 354 (18%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
Candidates with serious criminal cases: 294 (15%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to rape, murder, attempt to murder, theft, crimes against women etc.
Candidates with cases related to Murder: 24 candidates have declared charges related to Murder (Indian Penal Code Section-302).
Candidates with cases related to attempt to murder: 66 candidates have declared cases of attempt to murder (IPC Section-307).
Candidates with cases related to crimes against women: 48 candidates have declared cases related to crimes against women.
Party wise candidates with criminal cases: 66 (23%) out of 291 candidates from BJP, 86 (29%) out of 292 candidates from AITC, 58 (39%) out of 148 candidates from CPI (M), 15 (8%) out of 182 candidates of SUCI(C), 41 (45%) out of 92 candidates fielded by INC, and 37 (10%) out of 371 Independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
Party wise Candidates with serious criminal cases: 52 (18%) out of 291 candidates from BJP, 76 (26%) out of 292candidates from AITC, 47 (32%) out of 148 candidates from CPI (M), 31 (34%) out of 92 candidates of INC, 13 (7%) out of182 candidates fielded by SUCI(C) and 33 (9%) out of371 Independent candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
Red Alert constituencies: 31 constituencies in the West Bengal assembly elections have 3 or more candidates with declared criminal cases. Red Alert Constituencies are those which have 3 or more candidates with criminal cases contesting elections.

Crorepati Candidates: Out of the 1960 candidates analysed, 244 (12%) are crorepatis.
Party wise crorepati candidates: 114 (39%) out of 292 fielded by AITC, 46 (16%) out of 291 candidates from BJP, 31 (34%) out of 92 candidates from INC, 13 (9%) out of 148 candidates fielded by CPI (M), 4 (2%) out of 161 candidates of BSP and 19 (5%) out of 371 Independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.

Party wise average assets: Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 291 BJP candidates is Rs 71.28 Lakhs, 292 AITC candidates have average assets of Rs 1.82 crores, 182 SUCI (C) candidates have average assets worth Rs 13.55 Lakhs, 92 INC candidates have average assets worth Rs 1.41 crore, average assets of 148 CPI (M) candidates is Rs 40.60 Lakhs, 161 BSP candidates have average assets of Rs 14.68 Lakhs and 371 Independent candidates have average assets of Rs. 27.37 Lakhs.
Age details of candidates: 1094 (56%) candidates have declared their age to be between 25 and 50 years while 859 (44%) candidates have declared their age to be between 51 and 80 years. 7 candidates have declared they are more than 80 years old.
Gender details of candidates: 198 (10%) women candidates are contesting in the West Bengal assembly election this year.
