Puducherry, March 28: Puducherry unit of the Janata Dal (United) on Saturday urged the government to bring in a legislation to prevent slaughter of cows and also to ban sale of cows in weekly markets.
Population of cows had been declining fast in Puducherry.
The animals from the union territory were being transported to other places for butchery.
A legislation was necessary to prevent such things, party state president Arumugham said in a release.
The government should also make available cows to families where there were unemployed youth, so that they could launch dairy activities to eke out livelihood and to ensure adequate supply of milk for the consumer, Arumugham said.
