Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan: India salutes martyred CRPF men; supports agitating farmers
On Tuesday, India mourned the death of 25 CRPF jawans and stood in support of agitating farmers of Tamil Nadu.
New Delhi, April 25: Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer) was a slogan coined by former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965 to honour the two biggest pillars--soldiers and farmers--of the Indian democracy.
On Tuesday, a day after 25 brave soldiers of the Central Reserve Police Force were killed in a barbaric attack by Naxals in Sukma, Chhattisgarh, India paid rich tributes to the jawans during the wreath laying ceremony at Raipur, which was attended by home minister Rajnath Singh and chief minister Raman Singh.
Life came to a standstill in Tamil Nadu as the state observed a complete shutdown on Tuesday in solidarity with the drought-hit farmers, who were protesting in the national capital till last week. The bandh was supported by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Congress, multitude of trade unions, farmer bodies and even the film fraternity.
Farmers across TN, Maharashtra and Karnataka, to name a few states, have been struggling due to drought. Since last year, drought has severely hit farmers across the country. The agriculture sector is witnessing one of its worst crises, as farmers have lost their crops due to severe weather conditions.
Moreover, because of crop loss the farmers have no means to pay back their loans. Although states like Uttar Pradesh have given loan waiver to small farmers, farmers of Maharashtra and TN are agitating to get drought relief funds.
On the micro-blogging sites, Twitter, hashtags like #Strike4Farmers and 25 CRPF, were trending to showcase India's support for the farming and armed forces communities.
