IT department surveys businesses of Mayawati's brother
The Income tax department has been surveying businesses run by Bahujan Samaj Party Chief Mayawati. Anand Kumar had come under the income tax scanner after his asssets grew exponentially between 2007 and 2014, the period when Mayawati was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. His net worth grew from nearly Rs 7.5 crore to Rs 1,316 crore in teh period.
Officials of the income tax department are looking into businesses run by Anand Kumar and his assocaites after a paper trail unearthed possible connections with his companies to shell companies and dubious transactions. A channel had claimed that Anand Kumar had ghost investors, shell companies and sweetheart deals.
Details of shareholding pattern of Aakriti Hotel Pvt Ltd, a company in which Anand Kumar holds 65,000 debentures through two other firms owned by him were accessed. Documents accessed by the media house claimed that Aakriti is a company that sells equity shares to several companies. Shares were sold to other companies at a premium of ₹1,790 per share. The report alleged that the company had 37 shareholders but not all were legitimate businessmen and some existed only on paper.
