Ishrat Jahan case: SC to hear plea seeking quashing of criminal charges against Guj cops
New Delhi, March 1: The Supreme Court of India will hear a petition challenging the the filing of criminal cases against Gujarat police officers in connection with the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.
The Supreme Court was petitioned by an advocate M L Sharma who had also sought action against former Home Minister, P Chidambaram for filing a false affidavit in the same case.
The petitioner said that on February 11 he came to know about the judicial proceeding and statement of David Headley. He quoted Headley as saying that Ishrat Jahan was a Lashkar-e-Tayiba operative. He said that it is a fact that all those killed in the encounter were terrorists.
Gujarat state police claimed that Ishrat Jahan and her associates were Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives based on an affidavit filed by the IB in the Gujarat High Court. This affidavit was however changed within few months at the instance of Chidambaram.
Due to this cases were filed against some Gujarat police officers. In the wake of the new revelations, it is pertinent to quash the criminal proceedings against the police officer the petitioner also contended.
