In Assam, 112 crorepati candidates in the fray
New Delhi, Apr 1: The battle for Assam promises to be a hard fought one. The elections to the Assam Legislative Assembly this year will witness a large number of crorepati candidates.
The Association for Democratic Reforms has analysed the affidavits of 539 candidates and has found that 112 or 21 per cent of them are crorepatis.
The Indian National Congress leads the pack with 36 crorepati candidates and they are followed by the BJP with 23. In this report, we will provide a break up of the crorepati candidates and their parties.
Crorepatis in the fray
-Out of the 539 candidates, 112 (21%) are crorepatis.
-Party wise Crorepati Candidates: 36 (55%) out of 65 fielded by INC, 23 (43%) out of 54 candidates from BJP, 7 (64%) out of 11 candidates from Asom Gana Parishad, 2 (22%) out of 9 candidates fielded by NCP, 2 (67%) out of 3 candidates of Bodoland Peoples Front and 26 (9%) out of 280 Independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.
-Average assets: The average of assets per candidate contesting in First Phase of the Assam Assembly Elections is Rs 1.47 Crores.
-Party wise average assets: Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 65 INC candidates is Rs 2.62 Crores, 54 BJP candidates have average assets of Rs 1.50 Crores, 27 AIUDF candidates have average assets worth Rs 1.06 Crores, 13 SUCI(C) candidates have average assets worth Rs 10.35 Lakhs, 11 Asom Gana Parishad candidates have average assets worth Rs 6.06 Crores, average assets of 10 CPI(M) candidates are Rs 35.78 Lakhs, 10 CPI candidates have average assets of Rs 16.05 Lakhs and 280 Independent candidates have average assets of Rs. 1.48 Crores.
-Zero asset candidate: 2 candidates namely Jiten Tanti of CPI(ML)(L) from Teok constituency and Diganta Phukan of Independent from Mariani constituency have declared Zero assets in their self sworn affidavits.
