IISc B'lore to continue with 4-yr grads
Bangalore, Aug 13: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has finally given in to the demands of IISc for continuing with its 4-year BS program. However, there will be certain changes to the course as students admitted to the Bachelor of Science (BS) programme, will now be granted a BSc degree after completion of he third year of the course and BSc research degree on completion of the fourth year of the programme.

Earlier this week, the UGC had asked the institute to scrap its four-year program as it was in deviation of the 10+2+1 pattern. Following this, the instituete had asked the UGC to review the decision.

HRD minister Smriti Irani announced the same while answering a question in the Lok Sabha on August 6.

Meanwhile IISc Director Anurag Kumar said,I am decision and that the issue had been resolved amicably and professionally. "The students are actually happier. It will now be called BSc.

The IISc had also proposed a change in the nomenclature and scheme of the programmes, making it a three-year course for BSc degree and four-year BSc research degree.

UGC is said to have given in to it. The IISc, which is a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, has been offering a four-year undergraduate program in science (BS) since 2011.

This move comes in the wake of the recent debate between the HRD and colleges in Delhi regarding the scrapping on the four-year old program.
