The whopping response to the petition started by the MRM only shows that several Muslims in India are increasingly seeking to end the controversial practice of divorce. The MRM is an Islamic organisation that is associated with the RSS.

ANI reported that the positive response to the petition is linked with the recent success of the BJP in the recently held Uttar Pradesh assembly election where the party along with its allies won 325 out of the 403 seats. The BJP alone won 312 seats in the UP assembly elections 2017.

The petition and its response gained significance in the backdrop of the Supreme Court hearing a matter which sought banning the practice of triple talaq. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has however defended the practice. It said that it is better to divorce a woman than kill her. "It is a right bestowed by religion and cannot be questioned in a court of law," the board had contended in the Supreme Court.
