How this Congress leader smuggled gold to Chennai from Sri Lanka
The scanner of the Director of Revenue Intelligence is on a Tamil Nadu Congress leader who was caught ferrying gold from Sri Lanka. Rajendran or Good Luck Rajendran the Ramnathpuram district president of the Congress being investigated by the DRI officials.
Acting on a tip-off, DRI officials stopped a car that was heading towards Tiruchy. They found 119 gold bars with foreign marking. The gold weighing 11.9 kg and worth Rs 3.8 crore was concealed in the air bag compartment. The arrest of 'Gandhi', the driver, and his subsequent interrogation revealed that he was taking the gold smuggled from Sri Lanka to his boss, Rajendran.
Sources say that there is incriminating material that has been seized in connection with this case. Sources say that Rajendran is close to Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president S Thirunavukkarasar. When the official was asked if there was any link with the TNCC boss, he said that they are probing every angle, but nothing concrete has emerged so far.
'Gandhi' however admitted during questioning that the gold smuggled from Sri Lanka was being taken to Chennai. He said that he was taking the gold to Rajendran.
He also revealed that he had been working for Rajendran for nearly 20 years. Following his interrogation, the DRI officials raided the house of Rajendran. They seized mobile phones and documents that had incriminating evidence in it.
Officials say that Rajendran has several business interests which include a mineral water and bottling plant and also prawn farming. Officials say that he had once been arrested under the FERA act. Rajendran earned his nickname as he ran a travel agency called Good Luck.
Rajendran is a supporter of Thirunavukkarasar who was earlier with the AIADMK. He became the Ramnathpuram district president of the Congress after some members joined the Tamil Maanila Congress.
