Mandya, April 5: A 19-year old girl from Mandya was brutally killed and hanged from a tree. Named Monica, the girl is suspected to be a victim of honor killing. Belonging to a Gowda community, the girl had reportedly eloped with a Dalit boy.
The girl had eloped with her boyfriend and had married him last month. Her father and uncles traced her and brought her back. They convinced her how the marriage was a bad idea for the family name.
When she rejected their ideas, the three hatched a plan to kill her. Superintendent of police Sudheerkumar Reddy said that the father and the maternal uncles have been detained and they have admitted to murdering her. They hung her from the tree to make it look like a suicide.
Police said that the family had cremated her on their farmland in Timmana Hosur village in Mandya Taluk on early Sunday, which gave rise to suspicion. When the police reached the spot, the body was completely burnt.
"We repeatedly interrogated the family members separately for hours and there were many inconsistencies in their statements. After a while, Monica's father and her uncles admitted of their involvement in the crime," said the police.
