Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 26: The Kerala high court has backed the state government's decision to ban liquor in the state. Kerala is one of the biggest consumers of alcohol in India.

The court has also asked the state government to amend the existing liquor laws.

The court made the observations during the hearing of a plea for the renewal of licences of 418 bars in the state, said a NDTV report. On August 21, the state government had refused to renew their licences after a report indicated the bars were of sub-standard quality

Soon, the government decided to cancel the licences of another 312 bars. The closure notices to the bar owners are the first step in prohibiting liquor in the state.
