Harangi reservoir filled to capacity, crest gates opened

Water from Harangi will now reach KRS dam in Mysuru and to Tamil Nadu from there

The Harangi reservoir became the first in Karnataka to brim to full capacity this year thanks to heavy rains in catchment areas. With water levels reaching almost full capacity, officials have opened crest gates to allow water into the river. The Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir will now fill up quickly as waters are gushing out of the Harangi crest gates.

While full reservoir capacity for Harangi is 2859 ft and the current water level is 2857.21 ft. Keeping in mind the reservoir's safety, officials have decided to allow water into the river while maintaining the current water level in the dam. On Sunday the inflow to Harangi stood at 6640 cusecs. 1200 cusecs water was allowed to flow into the river.

Officials sounded the siren thrice before opening crest gates as a warning. Huge crowds gathered at the Harangi reservoir to see water gushing out of the crest gates into the river. Water from KRS dam is already being released to Tamil Nadu and Harangi crest gates being open will help increase water levels in the KRS dam. Currently, the dam has 84.70 ft water level as against the capacity of 124 ft.

The Krishna river and Ghataprabha rivers are in spate thanks to water inflow from Rajapura Dam. The inflow into Almatti Dam was 1.30 lakh cusec on July 23. As on Monday i.e., July 24, Srisailam dam recorded 777.3 ft water as against the maximum level of 885 ft. The Nagarjunasagar had 501.4 ft while the maximum is 590 ft on Monday morning.
