The Prime minister's speech gave hope to those in difficulty to deposit demonetised currency by March 31. He also said that such persons would get another chance until March 31 after explaining the difficulty, the Supreme Court observed on Tuesday.
The court was hearing a petition which sought to know why the reserve Bank of India had stopped accepting demonetised currency despite the government promising a window until March 31. The court directed the Centre to file an affidavit by April 11 on why the window was given only to NRIs and Indians who travelled abroad and not to citizens of the country.
The SC sought to know if the Centre intends giving people another chance to deposit demonetised currency under the ordinance to people with genuine difficulty. The SC observed that the PM in his speech had promised on November 8, 2016, that those with genuine difficulty would get a chance to deposit demonetised currency until March 31.
