Ex-GF's entry ruins wedding, bride marries groom's brother

Dehradun, April 21: In a filmy twist to a wedding ceremony in Dehradun, just when a couple were about to exchange garlands, the groom's ex-girlfriend barges in and claims that they were already married.

In Aavdipurhal village in Laskar, Haridwar, the women slapped the man several times in front of the guests before being pushed out by them. She claimed that she had been in a relationship with the groom for many years and that they were legally married. She, further threatened to get him arrested, if he dared marry another woman.

While other members of the groom's family tried to persuade the women, the bride had changed her mind by then. With the support of her family members, she refused to accept the marriage and called off the marriage, stating that she "could not accept as her husband a man who showed such scant regard for women".

A witness, under anonimity, said that the two families were unwilling to take the matter to the police and approached the panchayat instead.

As a solution to the plight of the groom's family, who have been 'enduring' humiliation, the Panchayat suggested that the bride considered marrying the younger brother of the groom. With the consent of both the parties, the marriage was solemnised late Sunday.
