Gauri Lankesh murder: Poorly lit street, cross roads helped killers execute plan

Suggesting that there was proper ground work done by the assailants, the police say that she usually left office only after 9 pm.

The initial probe into the murder of journalist, Gauri Lankesh suggests that it was planned in advance and the killing was a strategic one. Police sources say that while two men followed here, the other waited at the residence.

Gauri was shot dead on Tuesday at her residence in Rajarajeshwari Nagar. The police say that the location for the assailants was a strategic one. They realised that the road was poorly lit and there were many cross roads which worked to their advantage.

The police say that while street light is in front of her house, the other is 400 metres away. Moreover there are two under-construction apartments in front of her house. None of the residents of the area have claimed to seen the assailants. The fact that there are many cross roads in the locality helped the assailants escape with ease.

Suggesting that there was proper ground work done by the assailants, the police say that she usually left office only after 9 pm. However on Tuesday she had left an hour early.

This shows that they were keeping a close tab on her movements for a long time, the police also say.

The Karnataka State Police Chief, R K Dutta said that there are no eye-witnesses. He said that the people in the area heard gunshots and only then did they come out to see what had happened. In the absence of eye-witnesses, it is hard to say how many assailants were there, Dutta also said.

The police will rely on the CCTV which is outside her house for evidence and leads into the case.
