Footballer, journalist, politician: Meet Biren Singh, the next CM of Manipur
A National level footballer turned journalist, turned politician, N Biren Singh is all set to become the next Chief Minister of Manipur. Singh will lead the first BJP government in Manipur after a 15 year Congress came to an end on Saturday.
After playing football on the national level, Singh turned took up journalism. In the year 2002, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manipur as a Democratic Revolutionary Peoples' Party candidate. He was elected from the Heingang constituency.
He then joined the Congress and in 2003 he was appointed Minister of State of Vigilance in the Manipur government, In 2007 he contested on a Congress ticket and retained his seat. He was later appointed as Minister for Irrigation and Flood Control and Youth and Sports affairs.
In October 2016, he rebelled against Ibobi Singh who was the Chief Minister of the state of Manipur. He formally joined the BJP on October 17 2016. And became the co-convener of the party election management committee. He contested the Heingang seat and won the 2017 assembly elections, the results of which were declared on Saturday.
