New Delhi, April 28: On Friday, the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu told the Supreme Court that the farmers in the state committed suicide due to personal reasons. The state government added that no farmers killed themselves due to drought-related reasons.

"In the farmers' suicide matter in the SC, the TN government clarified that those farmers who committed suicide did due to their personal reasons," reported ANI.

The reply of the AIADMK government in the case related to farmers' suicide in the apex court is in total contrast to what the farmers of the state have been saying so far. According to the farmers of the drought-hit state, several of their colleagues have committed suicide since last year as their crops have failed and they have no means to pay back their loans to banks or private moneylenders.

Moreover, survey reports state that since October last year, every day two farmers are committing suicide in TN due to drought-related factors. Agricultural experts warn that the state is facing one of its worst agrarian crises. Recently during TN farmers' protest in the national capital, the agitators displayed skulls of farmers who had committed suicide due to drought at Jantar Mantar-the protest venue.

Earlier, the apex court on April 13 came down heavily on the ruling AIADMK government for neglecting the issue of farmers' suicide in the state. A SC bench asked the TN government to file a detailed reply in the case regarding farmers committing suicide in the drought-hit state. The apex court also slammed the state government for not taking enough measures for farmers.

During the hearing of the case, the SC bench said that it was painful to hear farmers are committing suicide and the state government is not taking enough steps.
