Thiruvananthapuram, July 1: A Kerala minister has sought an explanation from a top official on the proposed rule that from August 1 riders of two wheelers not wearing helmet will not get fuel at petrol pumps.

"Things will be discussed, but one thing is certain: Any rule that brings inconvenience to people will not be taken up," Transport Minister A.K. Saseendran told reporters on Friday.

Transport Commissioner Tomin P. Thachenkery said earlier this week that the rule will be in force from August 1 in three cities, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

Thachenkery said he discussed the suggestion with petrol pump dealers in the three cities and all of them agreed to it.

He also said that traffic police could impose a fine ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 on those who are caught riding a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet.

The minister said he has asked Thachenkery to explain the benefits of the proposed rule and what prompted him to favour it.
