Election: Setback for Rahul Gandhi, No address proof in Amethi

Rahul Gandhi
Amethi, April 3: In a major setback for Rahul Gandhi, one application for proof of residential address of the Vice President of Congress has been rejected by the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Amethi.

While rejecting the application, the SDM said the young Gandhi family scion does not have any proof which shows that he stays in Amethi or even occasionally stays in his constituency. This has come as a major embarrassment for Congress as Amethi has been the parliamentary constituency for Rahul for past ten years.

Rahul, who is yet to file nomination from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, applied for a residential address proof just to show that he is a resident of Amethi. His one of the most prominent opponent -- Kumar Vishwas, however, has been residing at Amethi for last few month.

Vishwas, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, is contetsing Lok Sabha election for the very first time. Earlier he had campaigned for his party during Delhi assembly election. The poet-turned-politician might become a challenge for Rahul Gandhi.

Irani, who at present is a Rajya Sabha member and is considered to be a close confidante of Narendra Modi, had unsuccessfully contested the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. She was defeated by Congress leader Kapil Sibal from the Chandni Chowk constituency in the national capital. She is yet to visit Amethi.

Amethi constituency is set to witness an interesting three-way contest in the upcoming polls as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) too fielded Smriti Irani from the seat. Amethi is going to poll on May 7.
