A minister in Devendra Fadnavis' cabinet said that those who do not want to sing Vande Mataram should go to Pakistan. Maharashtra's transport minister Diwakar Raote made the statement in reaction to Samajwadi Party and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen spokespersons deeming mandatory singing of Vande Mataram 'against religion'.

"Don't want to sing Vande Mataram? Shift to Pakistan," says Maharashtra minister

The row over making Vande Mataram compulsory refuses to die down in Maharashtra with the BJP and Shiv Sena backing it while SP and AIMIM rejecting the same. The Madras High Court's order over the same has only added to the already flaring tempers over the issue.

The BJP demanded that the government should pass an order making singing of Vande Mataram compulsory in all schools and colleges across the state. "Students of all educational institutions should sing the national song. I will give a letter to the Chief Minister to make singing Vande Mataram compulsory in all schools, colleges and government offices," said BJP legislator Raj Purohit. He also added that a demand on the same lines would be raised in the Maharashtra Assembly 'at an appropriate time.'

The SP, as well as the AIMIM, said that the same would hurt religious sentiments. Reacting to the BJP legislator's demand Waris Pathan of the AIMIM as well as Abu Asim Azmi of SP deemed such a move violation of their religious beliefs. "We respect the Constitution of India and it does not deem singing the national song mandatory," Waris Pathan said.

It was after this statement that Shiv Sena MLA and Minister in the coalition government, Raote asked all those unwilling to sing the national song to shift to Pakistan. "Those who do not want to worship their motherland should shift to Pakistan. Vande Mataram denotes independence of the country. If anybody has problems with it, they should shift to Pakistan," he said speaking to the media.
