DMK pits experienced players opposite Jayalalithaa

Chennai, April 14: On Wednesday, the DMK released its list of candidates for its May 16 assembly elections. While it has retained most of its ministers, there are still some new faces. M Karunanidhi will be contesting from Tiruvarur constituency and this would be his 13th fete in the lecetions. Meanwhile party treasurer, M K Stalin would be contesting from Kolathur constituency.

K. Anbazhagan, however, retired himself after contesting 13 elections. Out of the race are Suba Thangavelan and Coonoor K. Ramachandran and Pushpaleela Alban, K. Sundaram, S.N.M. Ubayadulla, N. Selvaraj, A. Tamizharasi and N.K.K.P. Raja.

Minister Aladi Aruna's daughter Dr. Poongothai will contest from Alangulam, whereas Union Minister N.V.N. Somu's daughter S.N. Kanimozhi will be contesting from T. Nagar in Chennai. Orathanadu will be represented by former Union Minister S.S. Palanimanickam's brother S.S. Rajkumar. Late Veerapandi S. Arumugam's son A. Rajendran and Suba Thangavelan's son Suba have also been given the ticket.

Surprisingly, former Minister S.P. Sargunapandian's daughter-in-law Shimla Muthuchozhan has pitted against chief minister Jayalalithaa in the R.K Nagar constituency. Another notable person in the fray is P.T.R.P. Thiyagarajan, son of former Speaker P.T.R. Palanivel Rajan, who will be contesting from Madurai.

Apart from this, most notable ministers are contesting from their home constituencies including Duraimurugan in Katpadi. DMK will face their AIADMK rivals in 170 constituencies.
