Chennai, Nov 21: Two-wheelers, iPhones and residential plots -- to make it a win in elections, DMK's mid-level leaders are trying to woo their voters with all these things for even minor posts like union secretary and town secretary.
In DMK, party workers in villages elect their representatives at panchayat level. These panchayat representatives elect union secretaries who in turn elect the district secretary. These district secretaries enjoy power and practically control the organisation. As per sources the election for district units would be held in December.
"There were three candidates in the fray for the union secretary post with 70 voters. While this woman gifted smart phones, her competitor has promised scooters for those who would vote for her in the secret ballot system," a former MLA was quoted as saying in the daily.
For the party elections, DMK men are spending good amount of money to grab a post and not only spending money even abduction of candidates have been reported.
Affected groups have even complained about the foul play as candidates have been offering gold rings, smart phones and plots to influence voters.
Eight districts will hold their polls on November 24.
As per TOI report, "Defending the poll process, organizing secretary TKS Elangovan said DMK is the only party that holds elections in a democratic way and the high command has postponed elections in some places because of the allegations but denied voter inducements in the form of gifts."
By using money power during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, DMK has already set a trend.
