Police suspect that the woman, appearing to be in her late 20s, was raped before being strangled to death. The body, which was was found in the field yesterday by a farmer, has been sent for postmortem, a police official said.
"The autopsy report is awaited to ascertain the exact cause of death but it appears that the woman was first raped and then strangled," he said.
A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered against unidentified persons. Meanwhile, in another case, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth in Shamli's Ghari Doletpur village.
According to the complaint lodged by the minor's father, the accused, Tasuwer (22), forcibly took the girl to his house and raped her there.
A case has been registered against Tasuwer under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC and Protection Of Children From Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), SHO Pankaj Verma said.
