Haryana: Desi 'gulail' is police officials' new ammunition
Chandigarh, Feb 9: The Haryana Police is opting for a new method to control the unruly mob during violence and protests.
According to a report in TOI, Haryana Police officials are putting down their guns and instead are opting for marbles and 'gulail' or slingshot to control protestors.
The tactic, devised by by Hisar range IG A K Rao, is replicated from their Jammu and Kashmir counterparts. Rao said: "Those agitating are our own people," Rao said.
"They are not criminals. We cannot pelt back stones at them. Hence, we ordered 1,000 such gulels with marbles and chilli balls. They don't kill but are effective in dispersing mobs. Our boys are well-trained and can use them in any situation," he added.
Officials say that around 1000 marbles have been distributed among 40 policemen who have been trained to use them effectively.
Earlier there have been incidents when protestors have died due to the impact of rubber bullets fired at them by policemen during protests.
