New Delhi, Feb 21: Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested an alleged rapist who assaulted a Nagaland woman over the weekend near a popular hangout in south Delhi.

Arrest

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ishwar Singh identified the accused only by his first name, Jhandal, 23.

The accused, who worked as a part time cleaner at some pubs and restaurants in Hauz Khas village - one of the most frequently visited places by the well-heeled, was identified from CCTV footages.

Singh told IANS that police examined the recordings from a total of 40 pubs and restaurants located in the area.

He said the accused was nabbed early on Tuesday from nearby Arjun Nagar, where he lived in a rented accommodation.

Jhandal had snatched the victim's mobile phone to prevent her from calling the police after he committed the crime. The cellphone was also recovered.

Police said the 24-year-old woman had visited a Hauz Khas pub with a group of friends and her elder sister before she was allegedly assaulted on Saturday night.

She was walking alone to her residence when the accused offered her a ride home, saying his vehicle was parked at some distance, police said.

He then led her to an isolated stretch in the adjoining park area and allegedly sexually assaulted her. The woman, police said, had also hit the accused with a stone before he escaped from the spot.

She later approached a police party patrolling the area.
