Delhi assembly: Speaker, Dy Speaker to be elected today
It is rumoured that the Congress will support AAP's speaker candidate MS Dhir. Meanwhile, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said who becomes speaker isn't an issue for his party. The BJP's speaker candidate Jagdish Mukhi had on Wednesday called AAP 'Maoists' right-wing party'.
A pro-term speaker presides over proceedings relating to taking of oath by new members and other business till the election of Speaker.
The election of the Speaker comes after Delhi chief minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal won the trust vote in the assembly on Thursday with the support of Congress, JD (U) and an independent legislator.
Mukhi, the senior-most legislator in the assembly, had declined to be the pro-term Speaker of Delhi Assembly. Janata Dal(U) MLA Shoaib Iqbal had also declined to be the pro-term Speaker.
Subsequently, Congress MLA Mateen Ahmad was appointed pro-tem speaker. Ahmad administered the MLA's oath-taking ceremony.
