On Wednesday, Congress had declared their support to MS Dhir. "We have issued a whip to our MLAs to support the AAP candidate," Delhi Congress President Arvinder Singh Lovely said.Dhir contested against Bharatiya Janata Party's Jagdish Mukhi for the post of Speaker.
Congress MLA Mateen Ahmad had been handling the duty of Speaker of the House after Mukhi declined to be the the pro-term Speaker. The election of the Speaker comes after Delhi chief minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal won the trust vote in the assembly on Thursday with the support of Congress, JD (U) and an independent legislator.
Mukhi and Dhir were the only candidates left in the fray for the post after the deadline for filing nominations expired on Tuesday. AAP, which has 28 MLAs, needed the backing of eight Congress MLAs to secure the Speaker's post for itself.
It can also count on the support of lone JD(U) MLA and an Independent who also backed the confidence motion.
