New Delhi, Sept 5: Deepak Sandhu, a former Indian Information Service officer of 1971 batch, was sworn in as the Chief Information Commissioner of the Central Information Commission by President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

She has served many key positions in India and abroad, which include being the Principal Director General (Media and Communications) Press Information Bureau, Director General DD News, Director General (News) All India Radio, before being appointed the Information Commissioner in 2009.

She has also represented India on several occasions at the International Film Festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Tokyo. Some of the other prestigious events that she has been a part of include the International Conference on Terrorism and Electronic Mass Media at Glendzhik (Russia) and Cyprus. She has been the Heads of News Meetings in Atlanta, Beijing and USA.

Speaking to reporters, she says that her journey in the RTI is just a beginning and she aims to take it forward by engaging with various stakeholders. But, her biggest challenge would be to clear 30,000 pending cases within the next three months, after which her tenure ends.

"We are waiting for new Commissioners which are likely to be appointed soon. It will ease our burden of disposal of cases and also reduce the pendency at the Commission," she said.

Sandhu succeeded Satyananda Mishra, who served office of the CIC for five years, before resigning yesterday. He headed the Bench, which proposed that political parties should also come under the ambit of RTI Act.
