Country cannot be held to ransom by agitations: Supreme Court
New Delhi, Feb 24: Expressing deep concern over damage to public property during agitation involving Pattidar leader Hardik Patel, the Supreme Court has rebuked BJP and Congress.
The apex court said that these political parties can be held accountable for huge loss to the country during the agitation.
"We cannot allow people to burn nation's properties and take the country to ransom in the name of agitation," the top court said while hearing a petition against Hardik Patel and his aides.
The plea was filed by Ahmedabad crime branch.
"We must take a call on the issue and we would frame guidelines for taking action against people for damaging properties in agitation", Court further said.
Earlier, Patel quota stir spearhead Hardik Patel who is facing a slew of criminal charges in connection with the stir ruled out any compromise on demand for reservation for the community in Gujarat.
Hardik made it clear that the talks underway with the state Government are only about the release of incarcerated quota agitation leaders and not over demand for reservation in jobs and education for Patels under the OBC category.
