Bareilly, Aug 22: Call it police apathy or administrative negligence, a corpse lay out there run over by 16 trains in 6 hours. Policemen from the Bareilly station and the GRP were called by witnesses who saw a gruesome accident where a 20-year old was run over by Akal Takht Express, from Howrah and bound for Amritsar, at the Shamshan Bhoomi crossing under the Quila police station at around 6.18 am on Thursday.

As the train's driver intimated the station master, GRP officials were requested to remove the body, which was redirected to the Quila police station who were also asked to conduct a post mortem. This triggered a feud between the two groups when both of them refused to remove the corpse.

While the drama continued for 6 hours, more than 16 trains-Saryu Yamuna Express, Poorbiya Express, PBR Express, Gharib Nawaz Express, Awadh-Assam express and the Gharib Rath-run over the corpse, mangling it beyond recognition.

Only when senior police officials intercepted was the corpse removed. Quila police station inspector Qamrul Hasan said,"After the GRP refused to take the body into custody, we have sent it for postmortem.

The corpse of the man, in his early 20's, will be kept at the mortuary for 72 hours and if no one turns up to claim it, we will conduct the last rites at government expense. As of now, his identity has not been established."

Similar allegations were levelled by the inspector GRP Bareilly, Chandrashekhar Gupta,"We were informed about the incident by the station master, but the accident spot comes under the jurisdiction of Quila police station and it is their duty to collect the body and send it for postmortem."
