Bareilly (UP), Dec 30: In a miracle of sorts, a newborn delivered by a Nepalese woman inside the toilet of a moving train slipped through the pipe onto the tracks but survived unscathed at Bhojipura Railway station here.

Pushpa Tamta (40), a Nepalese national on board Bareilly- Tanakpur passenger train, had labour pains while the train stopped at Bhojipura Railway station in the district yesterday, police said.

The woman gave birth to a girl child in the toilet but the newborn accidentally slipped through the toilet pipe and fell on the tracks, police said. Bystanders got alarmed on hearing the cries of the baby. Passengers pulled the emergency chain bringing the train to a halt after it moved some 500 metres. The mother and child were then united, police said.

SP (Rural) Brijesh Srivastava said GRP personnel swung into action and rushed the duo to Bhojipura health centre where the medical officer incharge, Dr Saurabh, said the child was totally safe and did "not have even a scratch" on her body.

The woman and her daughter will, however, be kept under observation for a day before being handed over to the police, the doctor said. Pushpa, who was travelling alone, belongs to Mohan Nagar Bhagatpur in Kanchanpur district of Nepal and was on her way to Sitapur Eye Hospital here for a check up.
