Chemical bomb threat during Obama visit: Was it the youth from Thane?

Thane, Jan 22: A Twitter handle @mangetgas had tweeted that a chemical bomb idea will be good ahead of the Barack Obama visit to India.

Whether this tweet is a genuine threat or another case of mischief like the one at the Mumbai airport is something that the National Investigating Agency (NIA) is looking into.

Bomb Blast

The NIA although saying anything conclusively, however, maintained that this could well be the mischief of one of the youth who joined the ISIS. Four youth had left Thane and joined the ISIS of which one came back after doing menial jobs.

Watching the handle:

The NIA says that they have been watching the handle and suspect that it could one of the youth from India who is still with the ISIS.

The pattern of the tweets indicate this. However, we are looking into it and will get to the bottom of it, the NIA also added.

The message from this handle @mangetgas says that the enemy of the Muslims is coming to India. Indian Muslims are good with Chemical bombs and hence a chemical bomb will be a good idea.

Could be mischief:

Intelligence Bureau officials however point out that this could well be another case of mischief like was done at the Mumbai airport.

Most of the times terrorists do not put out their plans in public domain. This is either aimed at sensationalizing or distracting the security agencies.

What the messages at the airport and this tweet has effectively managed to do is keep the agencies busy behind this case. Basically they have managed to create panic.

The agencies on the other hand although know that it could well be a case of mischief cannot ignore such messages and tweets as in matters of security one needs to be doubly sure always.

Normal during high profile visits:

While sending such tweets and messages are normal during the visit of high profile personalities or during important events, this time around the menace is much higher.

The advent of the social media has given rise to mischief as well, an officer points out.

A maverick normally sends out a tweet which is covered extensively by the media. This not only gives the publicity desired, but also spreads panic.

Creating panic and spreading fear is one of the primary goals of every terrorist outfit, officials also say.
