British citizenship row: Parliament’s ethics committee issues notice to Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi, Mar 14: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi could be in trouble soon. Reportedly Parliamentary Ethics Committee has issued showcause notice to Congress scion and told him to explain about his British citizenship.
As per news reports, the Committee headed by BJP leader LK Advani has asked Rahul Gandhi to respond over whether he had declared himself as a British citizen during his stay in the UK.
When asked about this news reports, Parliament's ethics committee member Arjun Ram Meghwal was quoted by ANI as saying, "A complaint reached the Lok Sabha speaker which she forwarded to the Parliamentary Ethics Committee. The Ethics Committee therefore issued a show-cause notice asking him to respond to as to how he showed his British citizenship when he was about to become the director of a company in London".
Meanwhile, responding over the notice, Rahul Gandhi said, "We'll deal with that."
Last year, senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had created huge uproar when he accused Rahul Gandhi of possessing dual citizenship.
In a press conference, Swamy said that Congress VP had declared himself as a British citizen in 2003-2009 for purpose of floating a private company in London.
" I have written a letter to PM Narendra Modi, enclosing authenticated documents regarding registration in 2003 of a private company in Britain. The company's name is 'Backops' and its Director is 'Rahul Gandhi' who declared himself to be British national in the registration papers." "As per article 9 of Indian constitution, any Indian citizen cannot acquire dual citizenship," Swamy further had said
