BJP digs out Nehru's letter seeking horoscope for Rajiv Gandhi to defend Smriti Irani

New Delhi, Dec 18: Days after Congress criticised HRD Minister Smriti Irani for visiting astrologer, BJP on Wednesday came out with a letter by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru seeking a horoscope by a competent astrologer for his grandson Rajiv Gandhi soon after his birth.

In the letter to his sister Krishna Hutheesing from the Ahmednagar Fort prison in August 1944, Nehru has asked her to get a "proper horoscope made by a competent person" for his grandson, says a Times of India report.

"In my letter to Indu, I suggested to her to ask you to get a proper horoscope made by a competent person. Such permanent records of the date and time of birth are desirable. As for the time, I suppose the proper solar time should be mentioned and not the artificial time which is being used outside now. War time is at least an hour ahead of the normal time," the letter has been quoted as saying in media report.

The report said Nehru wrote this letter on August 29, 1944, eight days after the birth of Rajiv Gandhi. The letter was released during a joint press conference addressed by senior BJP Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Recently, HRD minister Smriti Irani had come under attack when she visited a palmist in Bhilwara district of Rajasthan. At that time, Opposition parties accused Smriti of diluting ‘scientific temper'.
