Bihar village head can now fine/punish for "vulger" songs in public

Patna, Feb 18: The village head in Bihar or Sarpanch in Bihar has now been given additional power of punishing people for singing vulgar songs in Public.

According to media reports, the State Panchayati Raj Minister Bhim Singh said that the government has decided to uproot crime at the basic level by giving charge to the Sarpanch.

In fact, the Sarpanch can punish or impose fine of Rs 200 on a person if he sings vulgar songs, makes obscene gestures and abuses others at a public place. Currently, the village headmen are being trained for the same and are also being acquainted with their power and capacities for a speedy process.

The Gram Kacheri (village court) on the one hand is likely to be advantageous in terms of the piling cases in courts, but on the other hand, it may lead to a worry that it may misuse it for honour crime, especially when it is on the rise.(Read)
