Poll Result Updates: BJP sweeps to power in Assam; Congress-DMK combine wrests power in Puducherry

New Delhi, May 19: BJP created history on Thursday, May 19 storming to power in Assam, the first time in a north eastern state, as the party along with its allies won 86 of the total 126 seats and pushing ruling Congress to a dismal defeat.

BJP won 60 seats, its allies AGP and BPF 14 and 12 seats respectively. Congress was decimated to only 26 seats compared to 68. [Special Coverage: Assembly Elections 2016]

Prominent winners in Assam: Outgoing Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, BJP chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal, AGP president Atul Bora, former two-time AGP Chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Speaker of the outgoing assembly Pranab Gogoi, BJP state election committee convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma and former AGP working president Phanibhushan Choudhury who made it to the state Assembly for the seventh consecutive term.

Prominent losers in Assam: Former union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, Congress ministers Gautam Roy, Sarat Borkotoky, Etuwa Munda, Bismita Gogoi, Siddeque Ahmed, Chandan Sarkar, Ajit Singh, Basanta Das, Bismita Gogoi, Sumitra Patir, and Girindra Malik.

Retainers in the outgoing Assam govt: Rakibul Hussain, Dr Nazrul Islam, PWD Minister Ajanta Neog, Minority Development and PHED minister Sukur Ali from Chenga.

PUDUCHERRY

In a consolation win of sorts for Congress, the party in alliance with DMK stormed to power in this tiny union territory, securing a simple majority of 17 in the 30-member assembly.

Congress which contested 21 seats won in 15 seats. DMK emerged succesfull in two segments, giving the combine a clear majority as it bucked initial trends of a close fight with the ruling-AINRC.

AIADMK, which contested the elections on its own, won four seats.

Here are all the latest updates of poll counting;

10.00 pm: After a gap of 20 years, the Puducherry assembly will have women legislators with four of them getting elected. V Vizeaveny (Cong - Nettapakkam), Geetha (DMK-Neravy T R Pattinam, B Kobika (AINRC -Thirubuvani) and Chandrapriyanka (AINRC - Neduncadu) were among the 30 legislators elected to the assembly. No women candidate were elected to the assembly after S Arasi (AIADMK) in 1996.

9.45 pm: BJP appoints Union Minister Thavar Chand Gahlot and its vice president Om Prakash Mathur as observers for the meeting of its legislature party in Assam where Sarbananda Sonowal will be formally elected as its leader.

9.30 pm: The performance of AIUDF, the main opposition party in the outgoing Assembly, was disappointing as its tally came down to 13 from 18 in the last Assembly polls and its chief Badruddin Ajmal losing to Congress candidate Wajed Ali Choudhury in South Salmara.
