Asaram's followers beat up lawyer outside Jodhpur court
Jodhpur, Jan 16: Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu's supporters beat up a lawyer in front of the Jodhpur court on Thursday afternoon. Asaram, who has been charged with sexually assaulting one of two Surat-based sisters who stayed at his ashram in Gujarat between 1997 and 2006, is undergoing trial for illegal confinement and criminal conspiracy. He has also been accused of raping a teenage girl at his ashram in Jodhpur.

More details of the attack on the lawyer is not known.

On Thurday, magistrate's court in Jodhpur provided a copy of the charge sheet to Asaram's lawyer as per the accused's request. The charge sheet has charged Asaram with violating Section 376 (rape), Section 377 (unnatural sex), Section 342 (wrongful confinment), Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), among other charges.

Those named in the charge sheet apart from Asaram, are his wife Lakshmi, daughter Bharti and four women followers Dhruvben, Nirmala, Jassi and Meera who have been charged with abetment, illegal confinement and conspiracy.

Asaram's advocate has demanded that the accused should be provided a chartered flight to bring him to court from Jodhpur jail to attend the hearing on January 29.

The Surat police had on October 6 2013 registered complaints filed by two Surat sisters -- one against Asaram and the other against his son Narayan Sai.
