Arms dealer's Romanian wife complains of assault in Tihar jail

Arms dealer's wife assaulted in jail?
New Delhi, March 4: Anca Verma, the wife of arms dealer Abhishek Verma, has complained that she is being assaulted in the Tihar jail.

The lawyer of Romanian citizen Anca, has written to the Romanian Embassy, alleging that his client is being assaulted by hard core criminals in Tihar Jail and has asked the embassy to intervene in the matter.

Anca told her counsel in the Tis Hazari court room on February 28 that she was assaulted by one female convict, by the name of Sonia, lodged in Jail No. 6, reported media.

"Anca's finger was displaced and she received bruises on her arm due to the assault. I saw Anca in a bandage and in severe pain in the court," Anca's counsel said. " As the learned judge was on leave, we did not get a chance to inform the Hon'ble court of this attack, but we will in the next hearing on 25 March," he added.

The lawyer alleged that the assistant superintendent of Jail 6, Raman Sharma, has been trying to extort money from Anca for the last few months but since Anca refused to give in to his demand of Rs.2 lakh on several occasions, he instigated jail inmates against Anca and provoked them to beat her.

Tihar Jail officials ruled out the allegations as false and baseless. "These charges are false and fabricated. Sometimes they want unauthorised privileges and when denied, they make allegations,'' said Sunil Gupta, Tihar's spokesperson, to Mail Today.

Abhishek and Anca Verma are facing prosecution in a case lodged by the CBI on a complaint of the defence ministry under the provisions of the Official Secrets Act for allegedly possessing secret documents and supplying them to foreign nationals.
