APJ Abdul Kalam passes away: What is national day of mourning?

New Delhi, July 27: APJ Abdul Kalam passed away on Monday, July 27. He collapsed on stage while giving a lecture at IIM Shillong.

Doctors claimed that Dr Kalam suffered a massive cardiac arrest. He was almost brought dead, stated media reports.

V Shanmughanathan, Governor of Meghalaya, rushed to Bethany hospital where Dr Kalam was admitted. According to sources, doctor did not make any official announcement till the governor reached the hospital at 7:45 pm.

Government of India on Monday declared a seven-day national mourning for the demise of India's most popular president.

What is national day mourning?

Many countries across the world observe national day of mourning following the demise of the death or funeral of a renowned individual or individuals from that country or elsewhere.

National day of mourning is also observed during the anniversary of such a death or deaths.

Flying a flag of that country at half-mast is a common symbol to observe national day of mourning.

It has been reported that both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha are likely to make obituary references and adjourn as a mark of respect to Dr Kalam.

Many schools, colleges, other educational institutions and government institutions too will be closed on Tuesday.
