According to officials, many Americans have gone to Syria to fight with the Islamist extremist groups like ISIS. "The threat we are most concerned about to the homeland is that of fighters like this returning to the U.S. and committing acts of terrorism," a senior administration official told NBC News.

NBC News said that 33-year-old McCain called himself "Duale ThaslaveofAllah" on Facebook. His Twitter profile reads: "It's Islam over everything."

Douglas McAuthur McCain was born in Illinois and according to his classmates at school, he was a bright youngster who loved playing basketball and dance. He converted to Islam during 2004, according to McCain's own Twitter feed.
