Al-Qaeda operative brought to India from Saudi Arabia
He was wanted in several cases by the Special Cell of the Delhi police.
In a successful operation, India has managed to bring back an al-Qaeda operative from Saudi Arabia. The alleged operative identified as Syed Mohammad Zishan Ali is said to be associated with the al-Qaeda in the Sub-Continent or AQIS.
He was wanted in several cases by the Special Cell of the Delhi police. He is a resident of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and was operating out of Saudi Arabia, a Delhi police official said. He is incidentally married to the sister of Kafeel Ahmed, the engineer from Bengaluru who carried out the Glasgow bombing of 2007.
The police said that they had secured an arrest warrant against him in 2016 itself. The warrant was issued after the police filed a chargesheet in the AQIS case. Zishan's name first cropped up in 2015 when a Cuttack based cleric arrested in the same case mentioned him.
The police suspect that this module had been formed following a 2014 video by Ayman al-Zawahiri who announced the formation of the AQIS. Although the group has failed to gain much traction since the clamour is towards the ISIS, there are still some elements who are trying to set it up.
A week back, Zakir Musa who had broken away from the Hizbul Mujahideen announced that he was now part of the AQIS. A new video by Zawahiri also confirmed the presence of the group in Kashmir.
