Now LK Advani, Ramdev to get Padma award
New Delhi, Jan 6: You may be a little perturbed after knowing that BJP government will soon award some more people having Hindutava connection. Reports say that names of BJP veteran LK Advani and Yoga guru Ramdev are doing rounds for Padma awards. Apart from these, the list also includes vedic scholar and professor David Frawley.
Advani is one of the founding members of the BJP who gave party new high through his hardcore Hindutva agenda in nineties, while Ramdev is known for his pro-BJP approach in political circle.
On December 25, the Modi Government had announced that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and freedom fighter Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya will be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
BSP chief has already alleged that Government is discriminating luminaries on the basis of their caste. "Just like the previous Congress-led UPA government, the NDA government is adopting the same discriminatory attitude while honouring two persons of the same caste - Vajpayee and Malviya - with the Bharat Ratna recently," she told a press conference.
At a time when controversy has already engulfed the highly prestigious civilian awards after some sports persons allegedly lobbied for it, this move of the Government may earn them the opposition's ire.
The issue erupted on Friday with Saina tweeting her disappointment at her application not being considered for a Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award. "Friends, I am not demanding for the award... My question was why my name was not sent to the home ministry (sic)," she wrote.
Earlier, the outgoing Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said it was a "great pity" that athletes feel they have to "lobby" and "jostle with each other" for Padma awards. Omar's comments came after boxer Vijender Singh on Tuesday asked the Boxing Federation to recommend his name to the Sports Ministry for Padma Bhushan.
