After Jayalalithaa passed away, a demand that her party members made was to confer her with the Bharat Ratna. However with the order of the Supreme Court in the disproportionate assets case, the big question is whether she can be conferred with the Bharat Ratna or not.
The court has only abated the case against her. Technically the sentence is abated since it cannot be executed since she is no more. The court however did not hold her no guilty. It spelt out clearly how her official residence at Poes Garden was used to hatch a criminal conspiracy to conceal her ill-gotten wealth.
It is the centre that decides on who gets the Bharat Ratna. However going by this verdict it is unlikely that the centre would confer the award on her. Many are of the view that a Bharat Ratna for Jayalalithaa in the wake of the SC order would be wrong. Further it is also pointed out that the SC had made some stinging remarks against Jayalalithaa and her aides and this would automatically disqualify her from being conferred the Bharat Ratna.
As a result of this verdict, photographs from the assembly and other government offices in Tamil Nadu would also have to be removed. Moreover a grand memorial cannot be constructed at the Marina Beach with state funds.
