10 killed in Muzaffarnagar clashes, curfew imposed
Trouble first broke out on August 27 after a molestation incident in Kawal village of Muzaffarnagar. The man accused of the crime was stabbed to death, prompting his community to lynch two members of the other community.
Rajesh Verma, a journalist with IBN7 was shot dead and also the photographer hired by police, Israr, beaten to death.
Army personnel have been deployed in the riot-hit areas of the district
Late on Saturday night, a Home Department spokesman said in Lucknow that army personnel have been deployed in the riot-hit areas of the district to help civil authorities maintain law and order.
Curfew has been imposed in worst affected areas. Appealing for calm and warning against rumour-mongering, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said, "Whoever has done this will not go scot free."
He announced assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
