The Indian Army has rescued around 71 tourists who were stranded in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir due to avalanche hit.

Srinagar, Mar 28: Army has rescued 71 tourists, including 21 women and children, stranded in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir due to an avalanche between Chang La Pass and Tangtse village.

"Indian Army troops deployed in eastern Ladakh responded to help civilians trapped at the Chang La Pass due to an avalanche that struck between Chang La and Tangtse. "Seventy-one tourists, including 21 women and children, were rescued and provided medical assistance, food, clothing and accommodation," a defence spokesman said on Tuesday in a statement issued in Srinagar. The spokesman did not give details as to when the incident took place.

Similarly on January 28 this year, five army personnel were trapped under snow in Macchil sector along the Line of Control in Kashmir after the track leading to their post caved in. According to officials, rescue operations have been launched to save the soldiers.

The authoritites issued an avalanche warning for higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region and also advised people living there not to venture out of their homes till the warnings were withdrawn.

Twenty one people, including 15 army soldiers, died in snow-triggered tragedies, including avalanches, roof collapses etc since January 24, 2017 in Jammu and Kashmir. The weather office said the minimum temperature on Saturday here was 0.8 degrees Celsius.
