6 magnitude earthquake strikes Andaman and Nicobar Islands
The strong earthquake that struck the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago however, was not so powerful as to merit a tsunami warning.
Port Blair, March 14: An earthquake of 5.9 magnitude struck Andaman & Nicobar Islands at 8:21 am at a depth of 10 kilo meters. According to National Centre for Seismology the epicentre of the quake was in the Nicobar Islands region.
The strong earthquake that struck the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago however, was not so powerful as to merit a tsunami warning. After the tsunami that hit India in 2004, India has a tsunami alert centre which immediately alerts states and neighbouring countries in case there is a threat of tsunami.
There were no reports of any loss of life or property after the earthquake. India on Tuesday also experienced a mild earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Ritcher scale jolted Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir at 5:48 am.
