20 out of 44 encounter cases in Manipur are fake: NHRC
The commission heard 44 cases against security forces and among them, 20 were found as fake. NHRC is yet to decide on the rest of the cases. The commission has directed the state government to provide compensation to the kins of the victims who dies in the encounters.
As reported by IBN live, NHRC member Satyabrata Pal said, "The state government failed to establish that these were exchanges of fire by para military or police in an exercise of right of self-defence. These are joint operations, police is acting under the umbrella of para military forces and the AFSPA ensures that even if we find that these cases are fake the army is not likely to take any disciplinary action".
NHRC, in its first ever visit to Manipur had also visited Irom Sharmila, the iron lady of Manipur, who has been on a fast for several years in protest against the special rights given to army forces in North east states.
