Rajahmundry (AP), Jul 11: East Godavari district collector Neetu Prasad on Friday urged to people to adopt one-child or two-children policy in order to curb rising population in the country.

Prasad on the World Population Day here flagged off an awareness rally that aimed at promoting family planning policy among locals. "India has the second largest population in the world, after China, with a population of nearly 125 crores.

Due to excess population, we are unable to meet demands in fields of education, medical, housing and socio-economic growth is also slow," she added.

The district collector on the occasion laid emphasis to eliminate discrimination against girl child and said parents should adopt family planning, even if there are two girl child in the family.

To promote girl child, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched 'Bangaru Thalli' programme last year, under which assistance is provided for the girl child's education from school till higher studies, to families below poverty line, she said.

She also distributed an incentives of Rs 10,000 to three couples, who have two children through a lucky draw.
