Guwahati, Feb 8: BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi addressed a rally here on Saturday. The rally, named Maha Jagran Rally, is the second rally of the leader in northeast during the day. He addressed a rally in Imphal earlier.

3.29 pm : Does Congress think that the country is their personal property, asks Modi

Narendra Modi said: "Does the Congress think that the country is their personal property? When land has to be given, shouldn't the people be consulted? Don't fall prey to promises.I have come with determination," he said.

"I was shocked that during Rajiv Gandhi's tenure there was accord in Assam. The solution for all problems is development. Come to Gujarat and earn employment," he said.

Questioning the crowd Narendra Modi asked do you want to stop the corruption in the country. "There are ways to do away with corruption. But how will people who want to indulge in corruption do away with it?," he asked. "All the money in foreign banks will be utilised for empowerment of people, education for children," Modi said.

3.25 pm : Modi takes a jibe at Tarun Gogoi

In Gujarat, water pipes are so big that Tarun Gogoi, along with his family can drive a Maruthi in it, Modi said. "Had Atal ji become PM in 2004, your north-east would have been developed today," he said.

3.13 pm: Modi says Congress's ouster is certain

Narendra Modi said there's 100 days to go before everything changes, Congress' ouster is certain. "Law and order in Assam is poor. Almost everyday there are kidnapping and blasts. But the Congess doesn't care," he said. "You keep hearing that 'we gave you MNREGA, has anyone earned employment out of it," he asked.

Speaking about development, Modi said that the BJP will develop the northeast, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar equally. "If you want change, you need to change your thoughts as well. BJP wants the east of India to develop like the west has developed," he said.

Assam has so many rivers but Assam has no water to drink, he said. "In Gujarat we don't have so many rivers, but we have water pipelines and serve water to every house," he said.

3.05 pm: Modi speaks about his 'special association with tea'

Narendra Modi, while addressing the rally here said that Assam was a land of tea and timber. "And you know my association with tea," he said. He said that he was concerned to see that a land as rich as Assam was witnessing poverty. "Why is Assam poor when it has natural resources in plenty. Who is responsible for it," he asked?

"Out of the northeast states, Assam's condition is the worst," he said. "UPA is responsible for problems in Assam. If the PM wanted, he could have changed the face of Assam. Even the MP would have done more for Assam than the PM," he said.

2.58 pm: Modi targets Congress in his speech

Targeting the Congress party Narendra Modi said that the Delhi government was serving just one party. "For the Congress Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was their leader, for us he was the leader of the country. Congress leaders will not understand our feelings for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel," he said.

He said that Gopinath Bordoloi worked with Sardar Patel. " He should have got Bharat Ratna long ago but it was Atal Bihari Vajpayee who conferred him the award," he said.

2.52 pm: Modi begins his speech

Addressing a rally here Narendra Modi paid respect to martyrs. he said: "I am coming here after paying my homeage to all those who gave their lives in the creation of Assam." Assam has given many great people to the nation, he said. "I have stayed in every nook and corner of Assam," he said.

Security has been beefed up at the rally venue.

BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will address the Maha Jagaran Rally at the Veterinary Ground here on Saturday. He addressed a rally in Imphal before arriving in Assam and will attend his third speech in Chennai in the evening. This is Modi's first visit to the northeast after his anointment as the prime ministerial candidate in September last year.
