LS poll 2014: Campaigning for 1st phase to end today

Assam, Tripura gear up for 1st phase
Guwahati/Agartala, April 5: The campaigning for the first phase of Lok Sabha election on April 7 will end at 5 pm on Saturday. Five constituencies in Assam (Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Tezpur, Koliabor and Jorhat) and one in Tripura (Tripura West) will go to the polls in the first phase.

In Assam, campaigning in the five constituencies was at its peak on Friday with heavyweight leaders across the political spectrum wooing voters across the state. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, state Congress chief Bhubaneswar Kalita, Asom Gana Parishad chief Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, All-India United Democratic Front leader Badruddin Ajmal and BJP candidate from Lakhimpur Sarbananda Sonowal were among the campaigners.

In Tripura, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar campaigned for Shankar Prasad Dutta, the CPI(M) candidate from Tripura West constituency. Nearly 12 and halh lakh electors will pick the candidates of their choice in this parliamentary constituency on April 7. Thirteen candidates are in fray from 30 assembly segments under this constituecny. The polling will take place between 7 am and 5 pm. Security has been beefed up in both states ahead of the polling day.
